But in six years as the head man, Salinas has never had a team win the district title.

Until now!

Edcouch-Elsa won the District 32-5A team title after defeating Donna High last week and Salinas said he is extremely proud of his squad finally getting over the hump.

“We have always been so close to winning the team title,” said Salinas. Over the past four years, we have come in second place and were right there in the thick of things. But in the end, we were beaten out by someone else.”

“This year, the kids had it in their mindset that nothing or no one was going to get in their way of winning the title. The kids worked real hard and did the things to achieve their goal.”

Salinas said that the big reason the team won the title this year was their experience level.

“The biggest thing that helped us was the fact that we had a senior team this year,” said Salinas. “The mentality was that this is a senior laden team and they didn’t want to go out without bringing home the title.”

“Also, the younger kids learned a lot from the seniors and knew they had to step up. They didn’t want to let the older group down and left everything out on the court.”

Out of the group, one boy and one girl stood out about the rest and just happen to have a very close kinship to Salinas.
“My daughter and my son are the top players for the boys and the girls,” said Salinas. “Jenessa is the reigning 32-5A MVP from last year and was my number one for the girls side while Julio Jr., who is a freshman, is the number one for the boys’ side.”

“The way I feel is if my own kids want to play a sport, they are going to have to put everything into it. I told them that they better go 100 percent at all times and have to put the work into it.”

Next up for the Jackets and the Lady Jackets is the regional tournament which will take place in San Antonio on October 28th through the 30th and Salinas has one big thing he hopes his team will do.

“We have been to the regional tournament three years ago and faced some stiff competition,” said Salinas. “This year will be the exact same thing and I told the kids that the main thing I want is for them to be competitive.”

“We have a strong group and I know the kids will give it their all. There are a couple of seniors who may compete for the state level and that would definitely complete such a perfect season.”…/e-e-wins-first-team-tennis-title-un…/
