(CORPUS CHRISTI) – In the Rio Grande Valley, Edcouch-Elsa senior Kelly Aguinaga has proved that she is one of the top runners in Cross-Country.

Entering Saturday’s Corpus Christi Islander Splash Invitational, Aguinaga wanted to prove that she was could make a name for herself up North as well.

Mission accomplished!

Aguinaga more than made a name for herself as she won the Class 6A/5A/4A Individual Championship in the Girls Varsity division of the Islander Splash Invitational with a time of 12:42.

Thanks to her strong finish, Aguinaga ended up leading the Edcouch-Elsa Girls Varsity Team to an overall 5A/4A Division Title with a total of 30 points.

Prior to the start of the girls’ race, the organizers altered it as it became a 2.10 instead of a 5K which left E-E Cross-Country Coordinator Juan Aguinaga having to make an adjustment.

“After the 6A races, the organizers of the meet changed the course from a 5K to a 2.10 due to the heat and because a few runners had fallen due to heat exhaustion,” said Aguinaga. “In all of my 13 years of coaching I have never seen a race change from a 5K to a 2.10.”

“So I told the kids that they needed to adjust and to just roll with it. So they just went out there and did their jobs and were rewarded with a first place finish in the 5A/4A division. Kelly also went out there and made the necessary adjustments and took home the individual title as well.”
