This is the image for the news article titled Cross Country Team Finish Strong at Round Rock      As a senior, it was expected that Kelly Aguinaga was going to do great things.

But no one expected freshman Haley Villapando to be hanging with the big girls.

Villapando went up to Round Rock and finished 9th overall in the Girls Varsity Division with a time of 19:26.98 at the 2016 McNeil Cross-Country Invitational on Saturday.

Villapando finished second for the Lady Jackets on the day which is something that is no surprise to Edcouch-Elsa Cross-Country Coordinator Juan Aguinaga.

“Haley really ran an impressive race for being just a freshman,” said Aguinaga. “Having experienced teammates like Kelly Aguinaga and Leslie Alvarado to run with and learn from is truly a blessing.”

“To say we are surprised with her finish, I would have to say no. Haley is very athletic and a hard worker as well. We are very excited for the future because she is the future of E-E Cross-Country.”

As for Aguinaga, she led the charge by completing the race with a 19:12.21 which was good enough for 6th place.

Alvarado was the final Edcouch-Elsa girls’ runner to finish in the top echelon in the girls division as the senior came in 20th on the day.

Out of 43 teams that compete in Class 5A, the Lady Jackets placed fourth overall and Aguinaga feels that the girls are peaking at just the right time.

“Overall, the girls are starting to hit on all cylinders. Especially with district right around the corner, “said Aguinaga. “All of the girls PR’d in my opinion at the toughest and fastest course in Texas and the home of the State Championships as well.”

Mark Cardona led the boys’ team as he ended a two meet slump by placing 23rd with a PR time of 16:36.

“It was good to see Mark finally get out of his slump,” said Aguinaga. “He bought into what we talked about and came out with a PR and a very solid finish.”

The boys’ team finished 12th overall in the Varsity Boys Division in the 5A division.
